Italy: New Sleeper Train To Take Skiers To The Slopes Of The Dolomites

Italy is launching a new sleeper train to allow travelers to “rediscover its riches” in a new and sustainable way. As part of these plans, a new sleeper train is set to take skiers to the heart of the slopes in the Dolomites. Starting from December 15, a luxurious sleeper train will run from Rome to the iconic ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo. Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) launches a sleeper train for skiers

Italy’s state-owned railway company, Ferrovie dello Stato (FS for short) is working on exciting ways to take visitors around the country. Meanwhile, they are planning on revealing the country’s riches to travelers in a sustainable way. First, there is a new sleeper train leaving from Rome and taking skiers up to the Dolomites for a stay at Cortina d’Ampezzo. After that, even more sleeper trains are in the works, including more rail routes planned from Milan and Genoa in 2024.

Meanwhile, FS has picked the ideal time to launch the new sleeper train as ski season is almost here and the slopes up in the Dolomites will be waiting for skiers. Traveling in luxury and style on the new sleeper train to Cortina d’Ampezzo is a truly exciting experience, starting from December 15.

Leaving from Rome Termini, the sleeper train runs to the Calalzo-Pieve di Cadore-Cortina d’Ampezzo station. While this is perfect for skiing at Cortina d’Ampezzo, this is also the main arrival point for plenty of other ski locations in the Dolomites.

About the new sleeper train

What we know so far is that the Cadore Express train is set to depart each Friday evening in the winter, offering spectacular mountain views on Saturday mornings. Tickets are available from the Trenitalia website from November 18 with different options to choose from. The train offers 220-bed service, divided into first- and second-class two-person carriages. Moreover, it offers four and six-person sleepers for groups of skiers.

Meanwhile, the train offers a restaurant car, as well as an all-night bar for those who aren’t yet ready to sleep. As the train is geared for skiing trips, the Cadore Express will also feature storage space for skis and bikes. Moreover, e-bike rental and ski passes can be purchased on the train for those traveling at the last moment.

Train carriages offer a ‘unique experience’

According to FS, train carriages decommissioned in the 80s and 90s are to be repurposed for the train’s compartments. The company said these carriages have been “designed to give a unique experience, never seen before in the panorama of Italian rail transport.”

It seems that glamour from the past of Italy is going to be the name of the game for all new routes. According to Time Out, FS is already using “luxury” and vintage trains on some of the country’s most popular lines and lesser-known routes.

What is consistent throughout the Treni Turistici Italiani (Italian Tourist Trains) is that they will offer three types of services. Moreover, they will offer everything from luxury to slower-paced regional trains. In each case, FS aims to make the train journey “an integral part of the vacation” – a touchstone of slower, sustainable travel.

Among the new services, one train will link Rome to the ruins of Metaponto in Basilicata. Another will head to Reggio Calabria in southern Italy. Moreover, Milan will be launching a new service to Genova via Livorno, the Tuscan port city.

Meanwhile, FS plans to have the new routes available in 2024 and the company will soon release more information.
