The Algarve coast offers 120 km (75 mi) of stunning coastline, along with perfect sunny weather. Idyllic sandy beaches backed by craggy and scenic rock formations and several seaside resort towns along the way make it perfect for a family vacation. Like all the towns on the Algarve coast, Albufeira offers family-friendly hotels and holiday rentals, sure to make the family feel at home. Meanwhile, with its many shops, restaurants and cafés, mom can take a break from cooking for the family.

Once a tiny, traditional fishing, Albufeira has become one of the largest resort towns on the Algarve coast. This southern Portugal location has idyllic beaches and a great selection of restaurants and nightlife for a fun time.

Albufeira’s coastline offers an amazing 25 beaches to choose from. One recommended stretch of sand is Praia dos Pescadores (Fishermen’s Beach), located close to the Old Town and backed by restaurants and popular water sports activities.

One of the most popular beaches is Praia da Falesia, offering 5 km (3 mi) of sand, perfect for the little ones to run, splash and have fun. Meanwhile, some of this stretch of sand does offer water sports and restaurant facilities. For families seeking a quieter spot, Praia do Barranco das Belharucas has lesser facilities but is definitely a more peaceful beach away from the crowds.

While the beaches are great, Albufeira has much more to offer, including its quaint Old Town. This makes it an ideal place to explore the narrow, cobbled streets, lined with coffee bars and souvenir shops. Meanwhile, this part of town has a good selection of restaurants, offering everything from traditional cuisine to international dishes. Moreover, the town is said to have 160 eating establishments, giving a huge range to choose from for every meal.

For adults with a babysitter handy, one area of the Old Town has been dubbed “The Strip” due to its many nightclubs and bars. Of interest to note, Albufeira offers world-class golf courses for the avid golfer in the family.

Entertaining the older kids in Albufeira

While the smaller children are happy with a bucket and spade on the beach, older kids and teens will be looking for more activities. While Albufeira doesn’t have a water or theme park, regular buses run along the Algarve coastline to all the popular parks.

A great day out can be enjoyed in Zoomarine in Guia, a fun water park with an aquarium offering dolphin displays. For the daredevil older kids, Slide and Splash in nearby Lagoa offers extreme water rides.

On a historic note, close to the town, the family can visit the 12th-century Castle of Paderne. This well-preserved fortress was built by the Berbers and is located 8 km (5 mi) from the center of Albufeira.
