Exploring the beautiful landscapes, with the Cape Dutch and French Huguenot architecture of the towns and vineyards is a great experience. Constantia Wine Route, Cape Town
Located around a 20-minute drive from the Cape Town city bowl, the Constantia Wine Route is set in a beautiful, hilly landscape (pictured top). Here, some of South Africa’s oldest and most prestigious wine farms still continue producing excellent wines as they have since the 1650s. These include the iconic 1685 Groot Constantia wine farm (pictured above), with its wine tastings, cellar tours, two restaurants and a historical museum.The wines produced in Constantia are mostly cool climate offerings, including excellent sauvignon blancs, delightful reds and the area’s famous dessert wine.
Durbanville Wine Route, Cape Winelands
Like Constantia, Durbanville is also a 20-minute drive north from the city center and features amazing scenery including picture-postcard views across Table Bay to Table Mountain. The wine estates here feature a wide range of wining and dining experiences. Moreover, the vineyards of the Durbanville Wine Route feature intense, fruit-driven wines, produced by master winemakers. These are worthy wines to take back home after your vacation.Franschhoek Wine Route, Western Cape
With its French Huguenot heritage, Franschhoek is a historic and beautiful town, set in a valley and surrounded by gorgeous landscapes. Here, the wine features a strong French influence that the Huguenots brought with them to South Africa. Among the famous wines is the Cap Classique, a sparkling and champagne-inspired vintage.While there, the village of Franschhoek itself is a definite must-visit with its art galleries, antique shops, boutique hotels and great restaurants. What also makes this area of the Cape Winelands special is taking a trip on the Wine Tram to learn about the town’s unique history.
Helderberg Wine Route, Cape Winelands
Around a 30-minute drive from Cape Town’s city bowl is the Helderberg Wine Route, set in the Somerset West area. Again, this part of the Cape Winelands offers beautiful, historic estates, but with modern, cutting-edge wine cellars producing a diverse array of excellent wines. In fact, Helderberg has an excellent reputation for its white wines, particularly sauvignon blanc and Chardonnay.Stellenbosch Wine Route, Western Cape
Stellenbosch was the first to establish an official wine route between its wineries, all close to the university town itself. In fact, Stellenbosch is now one of South Africa’s six most popular tourist destinations. While the historic town itself is beautiful, Stellenbosch is surrounded by an amazing 148 wine farms, each with beautiful vineyards stretching through the scenery. Meanwhile, many of the historic farms feature stunning Cape Dutch manor houses, as well as fine dining restaurants and top-range hotels.A visit to the entire Cape Winelands can’t be done in a short vacation or a quick day trip from the city. In fact, visiting all these beautiful places and sampling the excellent wines requires a number of visits to take full advantage of wine tastings, dining, as well as a stay in magnificent surroundings.
