First-Ever Redeye Flights Take Off With Southwest Airlines Plus Events Service

Southwest Airlines announces redeye flights and options for popular sporting events

But that’s not all, as the airing has also announced redeye flights for the first time. Read on to get a rundown of the new flight options for popular events and to travel in the middle of the night.

New round-trip flights for gridiron fans

After Southwest Airlines expanded its college football and professional football flight options, the airline has also revealed that it is the official airline of the Southeastern Conference. Moreover, it is expanding the service for college football events as follows.

Expanded warm weather destination routes

For those seeking a flight to a sunnier location during the winter months, Southwest is also adding more flights connecting cold-weather locations to the California and Florida coasts. Starting January 7, 2025, the new routes with the redeye service are as follows:

Columbus, Ohio and Miami, Florida

• Chicago (Midway) and Palm Springs, California
• Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Miami, Florida
• Providence, Rhode Island and West Palm Beach, Florida

About Southwest Airlines’ new redeye flights

Southwest Airline’s first redeye fights are set to begin on February 13, 2025. Initially, the new overnight flights will be on offer between the following locations:

• Las Vegas, Nevada and Baltimore/Washington
• Las Vegas, Nevada and Orlando, Florida
• Los Angeles, California and Baltimore/Washington
• Los Angeles, California and Nashville, Tennessee
• Phoenix, Arizona and Baltimore/Washington

Southwest drops its open seating policy

In other news relating to the airline, Southwest just announced it was putting an end to its open seating policy. Instead, they will start offering premium seating.

The airline told CBS that these changes are its next step in “continuing strategic transformation” and are designed to “elevate the customer experience.”

Southwest made this change after research conducted by the line revealed that 80 percent of customers and 86 percent of potential customers said they preferred an assigned seat.

Henry Harteveldt, President of Atmosphere Research Group, told CBS:

Southwest’s decision to start assigning seats and plan to add extra-legroom seats prove an old dog can learn new tricks. I believe these developments are good news for the airline and its passengers. It will make their flights more orderly and comfortable. And it should also improve the airline’s bottom line as well.
