The Portuguese are family-oriented and when it comes to visiting families, they understand what every family needs. In fact, restaurants, hotels and the major attractions of Lisbon have been designed to accommodate the whole family.

Travelers do ask whether it is safe to visit Lisbon, and, basically, as long as visitors use the same common sense as they do at home, it is pretty safe. Here, the only major issues come from pickpockets, who hang around the city’s tourist areas late at night.

As for accommodation, Lisbon and its surrounding coast offers a full selection of hotels and resorts, or smaller bed & breakfasts. However, families may prefer to be a little more independent by renting a beachfront apartment or villa on the coast.

Shopping for the kids

As with the whole country, Lisbon features a good range of shops, supermarkets and pharmacies, stocking all the items you would use at home. However, depending on the brand purchased, you could find disposable diapers and baby formula more expensive than at home. Locals recommend the Pingo Doce supermarket chain, which has a number of stores available in Lisbon.

Best time to visit with the family

It can get pretty hot in peak season in Lisbon. However, the city does have dry heat, which is more comfortable than humidity. When visiting in summer, ensure the family regularly drinks water, and start sightseeing in the morning. However, for those who prefer cooler weather, May, September and the Easter holidays have perfect temperatures for the whole family. Meanwhile, a visit in winter will rarely see the temperature drop below 14°C (57°F).

Visiting towns on the Lisbon Coast

Among them, Cascais is a pretty resort town with great beaches and many attractions for the kids. Moreover, Estoril is also another town worth visiting.

Lisbon itself features one of the best aquariums in Europe and Lisbon Oceanarium is a fascinating visit for the kids. It features four large tanks, each representing a different oceanic region in the world. Each features marine life for that particular region.

– Jardim Zoologico Lisboa

The zoo in Lisbon is always a major hit for families, for its well-cared-for animals and excellent layout. The zoo features a large pool where dolphin and sea lion shows are held to educate the little ones. Meanwhile, the zoo also features a snake and reptile house, as well as a petting zoo where the kids can interact with the animals.

Lisbon’s colorful and classic trams are always a great hit with the children as they clatter on their way through the narrow streets of the city. However, it should be noted that during the summer season, the trams can get particularly busy, so rather take the children during the early morning or the evening.

Take the family to Lisbon, Portugal this coming summer, where parents and children alike will love everything the city and its surroundings have to offer.
