Travel 2026 trends changed a lot, but for now, it might be worth rethinking putting Mexico on your bucket list. In the last 48 hours, folks there probably stopped sunbathing on glorious beaches and thought about seeking a safe place, instead. Read on for more details.

Serious Unrest

Many outlets already shared the news about a major military operation. It came on February 22 and per The Sunday Guardian, the travel landscape in Mexico changed overnight. If you planned a trip or currently visit the country, it seems obvious that normal vacations seem out of the question. At least for now.

The outlet noted that:

The warning comes after the killing of Mexico’s most-wanted drug lord, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.” His cartel is fighting back. Highways are blocked. Vehicles are burning. At least 25 National Guard members are dead.

Favorite Destinations Are Dangerous

Unfortunately, some favorite destinations seem best scrubbed off the itinerary. For example, in Puerto Vallarta, with gunfire taking place, visitors shelter under lockdown in their hotels and apartments. Meanwhile, Chapala and Guadalajara might be best avoided. And, if you’re there right now, you might not find a flight out.

Reportedly, the backlash included burning vehicles, illegal roadblocks, and shootouts in high-traffic areas. While tourist zones usually stay on the sidelines of such conflict, this time things seem very different. While reportedly, Cancun and Playa del Carmen settled down on Monday, perhaps it might be best to delay going there.

Other No-Go Spots

However, no-go’s for now should also be considered for Jalisco, the main area of unrest. Plus, there’s still high alert warnings for Tijuana and Ensenada in the Baja California area.

Meanwhile, things could get sticky in places like Nayarit. But basically, the list of potential danger in Mexico seems extensive. Maybe it’s best to just not go there until the situation fully settles down.

Travel Disruptions & Chaos

Travel always brings folks a few headaches, but expect more than just minor delays, in or out of the country. At the moment, major airlines like Air Canada and WestJet scrapped flights to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.

Actually, the mix of airport disruptions and road closures makes planning a journey through the various states quite complicated. Apparently, Authorities even curtailed operations on several toll roads in states like Puebla and Veracruz. That’s to prevent gridlocks and more possible attacks.

What Should Travelers Do?

If you currently stay in an affected area, the best advice out there involves sheltering in place. Actually, try not to go anywhere and take note of local instructions from government authorities.

Meanwhile, if you plan a trip to Mexico this spring, get connected and stay connected through programs like US STEP.
