Europe is renowned for its ancient towns and cities, and idyllic beaches but for those travelers seeking something new, Albania is launching a new Mediterranean destination. While most head to Croatia, France, Italy and Spain, a new option is coming, with just as many attractions, but unique and perfect for that European vacation.

Until now, Albania has been an underrated destination in Europe, despite the country’s beauty. Among its offerings is Vlora, a coastal resort on the Mediterranean that will launch as a brand-new tourist destination in 2024. Why haven’t we heard about it before? Because it is only now getting its own international airport.

Albania is likely the least explored country in Europe, which means that it is perfect for travelers wanting to have a vacation without the crazy overtourism of many destinations.

Meanwhile, Albania is likely the most underrated and least explored country on the Mediterranean coast. Despite the US State Department verifying the country is safe to visit, Albania has had poor promotion in the past.

Admittedly, during its recent history, Albania was considered one of the harshest socialist regimes in Europe, with few people allowed to leave and less to enter the country. However, this has changed since the early 1990s. However, the damage to its reputation had already been done.

The country features 296 miles of beautiful coastline and several fascinating heritage sites and many coastal leisure zones to explore. However, it got left behind when neighboring nations like Montenegro and Croatia rose to fame.

Albania is working to change this

Until recently, Albania had no tourism infrastructure and only one major international airport to service the whole country. Moreover, the airport is located inland, making it a chore to for travelers to get to the coast.

Now, Albania is working on a new tourism milestone, while constructing a brand new airport on the Mediterranean coast. Moreover, the Vlora International Airport is set to open up Albania to international travelers.

From March 2025, travelers will be able to fly nonstop to the Albanian Coast for the first time ever as the Vlora International Airport prepares to open its doors. This new travel hub will make it much easier for travelers to get to the best beaches, without having to first land in the inland airport in Tirana.

While the airport is coming soon, currently there are no European airlines offering flights to Vlora right now. However, this is likely to change as the airport reaches completion.

Meanwhile, Vlora is one of the most culturally significant cities in Albania. The city has a recorded history of some 3,000 years, having first been colonized by the Ancient Greeks, and then developed into a trading hub on the Mediterranean under several empires, including the Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans.

Visiting the city’s colorful Old Town will be a treat in itself, as well as the Lungomare boardwalk along the coast. Here, visitors can head to Plazji i Ri, a long sandy beach backed by cafes and beach bars. Moreover, restaurants in the city are much more affordable than many other Mediterranean locations.

Meanwhile, Vlora as a whole is cheaper, with 4-star hotels for as little as $52 per night. Alternatively, a one-bedroom vacation rental apartment close to the beach starts from only $11 per night.
