About Tulum as a destination in Mexico

Located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, Tulum was originally the site of a pre-Columbian Mayan walled city and a major port for Coba. These days, Tulum is a charming resort town, nestling on the Yucatan Peninsula, renowned for its idyllic beaches and the well-preserved Mayan ruins. These include a large stone structure dubbed El Castillo (the castle), which stands high on a rocky cliff above the beach and turquoise sea. Located nearby, the Parque Nacional Tulum is a coastal area featuring mangroves and cenotes (natural limestone sinkholes).

While there are currently delays in the construction, Mexico’s famous new Maya Tren (Maya Train) will eventually take visitors from Cancun to Tulum. Currently, the train travels as far as the resort town of Playa del Carmen, while passing through beautiful scenery. However, those visiting Lula Hotel in Tulum can take the train as far as Playa del Carmen and then travel the 40-mile distance to Tulum by taxi at a cost of around 600 pesos (around US$30).
