Whether in North Island or South Island, New Zealand has plenty to offer to adventure enthusiasts. In fact, there is something for everyone, no matter what their fitness level or personal abilities. Here we briefly take a look at some of the adventure activities available in New Zealand.
Hiking, biking and horse trekking in New Zealand
With its gorgeous scenery, New Zealand has many well-established hiking trails, known locally as the Great Walks. Some of the best areas for hikers include the Marlborough Sounds, Abel Tasman National Park and Fiordland.
Meanwhile, the country also features well-maintained biking trails to choose from. Some of the best are the Otago Central Rail Trail, the Twin Coast Cycle Trail, Queen Charlotte Track and Nga Haerenga New Zealand Cycle Trail.
Horse trekking is another marvelous way to explore the countryside and beaches. In fact, it is a great activity for the whole family. Depending on the rider’s skill, you can just imagine trotting or galloping on Pakiri Beach and Muriwai Beach, kicking up the sand and the surf.
Canoeing or kayaking adventures
New Zealand features a wide range of canoeing or sea kayaking adventures. Among the best on offer is the chance to paddle around the sub-tropical Bay of Islands. For instance, Paihia in Northland is a prime location for sea kayaking. Meanwhile, the Whanganui River Journey is the only canoeing adventure in the iconic Great Walks network in New Zealand.
For those wishing to combine kayaking with walking, Abel Tasman National Park and the Queen Charlotte Track are ideal. In fact, combining the sea and land experiences offers a new perspective on an adventure vacation.
The Lord of the Rings and Hobbiton
Of course, anyone who has read the books and seen the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies has to visit Peter Jackson’s filming location. The perfect way to do this is to combine a tour of the film set with a wonderfully scenic adventure. Stroll through the scenery that made this the ideal location for Middle Earth. Along the way, follow in the footsteps of Frodo, Sam and their friends, exploring The Shire, the Misty Mountains and Mount Doom.
While many of the original props have gone, Hobbiton still maintains the charming homes of our Hobbit heroes. Moreover, there is the chance to hike to the Misty Mountains, Edoras and Weta Caves and visit Helms Deep, Rivendell, Lothlorien and Isengard. This makes one of the best possible adventures for any Lord of the Rings fan. Even better, be there for International Hobbits Day on September 22.
Ski Adventure in New Zealand
Heading to New Zealand in the winter months offers some of the best ski experiences, with the country’s snow conditions among the best in the world. Those who love this winter sport can take to the ski and snowboard fields in South Island, including Mount Hutt, Ohau, Cardrona, the Remarkables, Coronet Peak and Treble Cone.
As for North Island, the Turoa and Whakapapa Ski Areas in Tongariro National Park offer an excellent snowboarding or ski experience. However, for those who want to avoid the busier ski resorts, a quieter snowshoeing or ski touring adventure is available in the backcountry wilderness of New Zealand.
Experience true adventure in New Zealand with the family, while taking home the best memories.
