Italy Travel Advisory Updated As Protests Spread Across Europe

Travel to Europe seems worrying because France and Italy currently experience protests. In Italy, amid ongoing social unrest and a planned nationwide strike at the end of October, the UK issued a travel alert. And now the USA also sent out an updated warning to travelers.

The Latest Travel Advisory For Italy

The US travel advisory arrived over the weekend and Travel and Tour World reported that it’s because “the whole nation is going to witness protests over increasing living costs.”

The UK issued their warning earlier, but it came for the same reasons. Per The Traveler Org, “The United Kingdom has updated its travel advice for Italy, flagging a wave of urban unrest in several cities and warning holidaymakers to prepare for demonstrations, isolated rioting and a nationwide strike.”

Back at the end of September, the USA was aware of problems in Italy, and Travel and Leisure noted that a Level 2 warning arrived for American travelers. Back then it was not banning travel, but warning that travelers should be cautious “due to risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity.”

Trouble In France

Some people still love Europe, and Tourist Meets Traveler reported that some women were seen walking around with their cases during a protest in Paris. But, judging by what’s being reported on the news, it might be best to choose alternative destinations in the immediate future.

Chaos continues in France – Times Now – YouTube

The Associated Press reported on October 25 that protesters in Italy had “briefly occupied Rome’s Colosseum on Saturday, waving Palestinian flags and protesting the war in Gaza and the Italian government.” So, it seems that like France, where the protests started over teachers, in Italy, other groups of people also vent their grievances.

Problems In Spain

The unrest is not confined to France and Italy. Times Now reported on the weekend that Spain also experiences social problems. In their video on YouTube, the news arrived that “Protests in Barcelona, Spain, turned chaotic on Saturday as demonstrators looted shops and set fire to street furniture around the city’s central Plaza de Catalunya.”

The protests were sparked over “growing public anger across Europe over soaring housing costs.”

In that post, the comments arrived fast, and many travelers and observers had a lot to say about it.

One commenter said, “These are troubled times we are living in. The world we used to know is gone and I doubt it will ever return. Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride!”

Here are a few more responses from the discussion:

  • “Everywhere you see the needless destruction and plunder of shops and more That is not protest it is criminal and needs to be punished very hard.”
  • “Western Europe is burning.”
  • “So sad! We were in Barcelona a year ago. Beautiful city!”

Keeping Safe

If you do travel to Europe, then it’s a good idea to check in with your country authorities to see what level of alerts are recent. As with any country undergoing unrest, it’s best to avoid any protest gatherings, and stay connected with travel apps for transport and delay notifications.
