Travelers wanting to see more of Japan outside of Tokyo have a treat in store as Japan Airlines announces free domestic flights to tourists. The airline says the promotion has been designed to provide visitors a “seamless travel experience” while exploring the archipelago.

Japan Airlines introduces free domestic flights for tourists

Tokyo is an exciting city to visit, but it isn’t the only tourist attraction in Japan. Now, Japan Airlines is offering the chance to see more of the country by offering tourists free domestic flights. The domestic airline includes services to 64 airports on 133 routes in Japan and it hopes the free flights will encourage visitors to delve deeper into areas of Japan they wouldn’t normally explore.

Among the experiences are Kyoto’s 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites or escaping from the big city into the magical landscapes of Hokkaido in northern Japan. Meanwhile, travelers can visit Kagoshima, dubbed the gateway to Japan’s southern islands. Here, passengers can experience some of the country’s top outdoor adventures.

Moreover, the offer of free domestic flights could ease overtourism in some of Japan’s most popular attractions, including Mount Fuji, where entry fees and daily visitor caps were introduced to reduce crowding.

Meanwhile, a survey run earlier in 2024 revealed that over 21 million passengers from 100 countries, flying with more than 350 airlines deemed Japan Airlines to be one of the best in the world.

How can you book free domestic flights with Japan Airlines?

To take advantage of the offer, tourists can book free domestic flights if they book an international flight into Japan with the airline. Moreover, to qualify, both an international flight and a matching domestic flight must be booked in the same reservation.

Moreover, a stopover fee applies to visitors from the US, Canada, China and Mexico if they plan to stay in the first location for more than 24 hours before traveling on. Meanwhile, the offer is only open to travelers from Canada, Mexico, Thailand and the US.

For visitors from Singapore, the special offer opened up for tourists on September 18, while Australia and New Zealand travelers can book on September 19, Vietnam and the Philippines on September 25, and Indonesia, India, China and Taiwan on September 27. The airline plans to expand the list of eligible countries later in September.

It is also good to note that the offer includes a generous baggage allowance. For those travelers who book a Japan Airlines domestic flight from outside of Japan, economy class passengers can check in up to two pieces of luggage weighing up to 23 kg (50 lbs).
