Portugal now offers a digital nomad visa to allow remote workers, employed by companies outside the country to visit. It is also available for those freelance workers with international clients to stay in Portugal for up to a year. Meanwhile, there is a possibility of renewing the visa after that time, if specific criteria are met.

To be able to apply for a digital nomad visa, applicants must be able to prove a monthly income of €3,280 (around $3,453) or more. Moreover, they must be able to prove that their bank account has a balance big enough to cover their stay which is normally a minimum of €9,900 (around $10,694). Meanwhile, the digital nomad visa scheme simplifies visa applications for visitors as compared to other residency permits.

Portugal regularly promotes the digital nomad lifestyle for travelers in both the Living in Portugal and Moving to Portugal shows, regularly held in the US and UK.

Speaking of the remote worker and digital nomad visa, Christina Hippisley, General Manager of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in the UK, revealed the allure of the beautiful Algarve with UK and Irish buyers. She also cites a notable increase in visitors searching for property information in this region of Portugal.

Meanwhile, the stunning scenery of the Algarve, along with its laid-back lifestyle and warm climate also attracts many digital nomads, seeking a good work-life balance. Moreover, this coastal area is known for its excellent quality of life and safety when compared to other urban locations like Lisbon or Porto.

Moreover, several local initiatives are available to the remote worker community, including the highly successful Grow Algarve Meetups and Algarve Tech Hub.

The events provide networking opportunities and information for remote workers and digital nomads alike to help them integrate into the local community. Readers can find more information on the Portugal Resident website.
