For those who love true Italian cuisine, Modena is a gourmet paradise, with dishes accompanied by the best Lambrusco wines. Meanwhile, it is also home to the “real” balsamic vinegar. Moreover, typical Modenese cuisine offers some dishes that are part of the culture of Emilia-Romagna, but also those unique to Modena. For starters, imagine tortellini, a case of pastry filled with pork, sausage or cured ham and served in beef stock.  Larger versions are known as tortelloni and are served with spinach and ricotta cheese.

Modenese cookery also offers fresh, handmade pasta, including a delicious lasagna, baked in the oven with béchamel and meat sauce. Other dishes here are dominated by sausage, including cotechino, served with mashed potatoes and lentils. Heading into rural areas, dishes of stewed game meat are served with tomato and sautéed vegetables.

Meanwhile, not only can travelers enjoy eating the cuisine of Modena and the region of Emilia-Romagna as a whole, they can also learn to cook the dishes at home. Experience cooking those delicious dishes from scratch while learning more about the area along the way.

While Modena has several art galleries and museums, one must-visit is the Museums Palace (Palazzo dei Musei). The palace was built in the mid-18th century and was initially used to house the city’s military arsenal. However, the building had been designed by Duke Francesco Ill d’Este to accommodate the General House of the Poor. In 1769, the palace’s next stop was to be renovated by Pietro Termanini and became the House of Crafts.

Fast-forward to now, and the palace houses several key cultural institutions, including artworks, illuminated manuscripts, sculptures and objects of artistic beauty. In the building, visitors can explore the Modena Civic Museum, the Historical Archives, the Estense Library and Gallery and the Luigi Polette Library of Art.
